    Interesting that when Angus referred to 'England' post Scotland's independence the good Admiral's reflex action was to contradict with 'UK'. Methinks Angus hit a nerve .....
    On the Trident issue I'd like the Scottish Govt to up the ante and use the obscene cost of these WMD's at a time of slashed budgets to go over the heads of Cameron & co & speak directly to the English people. Not only would this illustrate the need for full independence at home but would strike a chord with many people in England who would be faced with the choice of paying out for expensive facilities at Devonport or junking the entire Trident system. Just watch the political fireworks .....

    Very evidently both Lords West and Forsyth were allowed all the time in the world to make their case, encouraged and prompted throughout.
    On the other hand, Angus Robertson had to fend off attempted interruptions and got cut off sharpish at the end.
    This is normal procedure which will continue all the way to the referendum. In fact, expect it to be 3-1 in terms of representative views in many and even most instances.
    Balance? Fairness? Impartiality? Not likely!!

    What a load of hysterical piffle from Forsyth and the redundant threats from West were bordering on pitiful. Peter, if you can be bothered - and I wouldn't be surprised if you just fluffed up your pillow and turned over again - give them both barrels and put them out of their misery!

    For the record, the 'Today' programme gave each contributor just over 4m 10secs, and the presenter interjections were about even. Instead of searching for imagined bias in BBC presenters, I feel we are better employed examining the content of what was said.

    Angus Robertson was placed at the end of the programme, and therefore had the time and the opportunity to prepare his response. He was not 'cut off' - the programme ended.

    If I get time today, I will attempt some analysis. The 'Herald' gives it front page today, and features extensive quotes from Lord West (!)

    I was somewhat disturbed - as I'm sure you were, Peter - that Angus did not address the Trident issue head-on. The employment issues associated with Trident could easily have been addressed by pointing out the opportunity for greater conventional forces at lower cost - as may be found in Scandinavia. The UK spends 2.7% of GDP on defence while Sweden spends 1.2%, Norway 1.6% and Denmark 1.4%. The Royal Norwegian Air Force operates more than 117 aircraft from seven airbases, the Royal Danish Air Force, which operates more than 111 aircraft from three airbases, and the Royal Swedish Air Force, which operates more than 187 aircraft from seven airbases. This is considerably more, in terms of manpower and bases, than the UK Government presently sustains in Scotland, and, if mirrored here, would easily soak up the workforce made redundant by the cancellation of the Trident programme. I hope Angus isn't going "soft" on nuclear weapons!
